Housing determines your access to quality schools. Neighborhoods determine your exposure to pollution. Transportation determines whether you can reach healthcare and jobs. Income determines whether you can afford healthy food.
This is a public health framework known as the Social Determinants of Health and it is the lens through which Martha will approach city policy decisions at City Hall.
1. Assess the whole patient, not just the symptoms
Martha will evaluate District 4’s challenges through their interconnections, not in isolation. Housing, health, environment, and economy are one system
2. Diagnose the root cause
Decades of deliberate disinvestment and discriminatory policy are the root cause. Band-aid solutions don’t treat the disease.
3. Prescribe comprehensive treatment
Every policy proposal includes specific, measurable outcomes, and community oversight mechanisms.
4. Demand Accountability
As a nurse Martha holds systems to evidence-based standards. She will hold City Hall the same. Progress will be measured, tracked, and reported.
5. Advocate fiercely for the vulnerable
Martha has spent her career advocating for patients who could not advocate for themselves. That is exactly what District 4 needs at City Hall.
